According to the RusIndex survey, the total number of outbound Russian tourists has decreased almost twice over the past three years, from 10% in 2014 to 6% in 2016.
First of all, the reduced number of those who went to resort, for excursions and sight seeing tours. However, the number of those who traveled to visit relatives and friends, as well as attended cultural events, did not change much - therefore, the share of these two categories in the overall structure increased.
The average spend per person for the last trip in 2016 increased by 40% compared to 2015. However, the reason of this increase is not in rise of prices (at least, the dynamics of the average weighted rate of the euro speaks of it), but in a change in the structure of the market. In 2016, average costs increased with a reduction in the number of travelers. At the same time, the share of travelers with a budget of less than 40,000 rubles per person, which in 2015 accounted for 67% of all outbound travellers, decreased to 45%. Simultaneously, the share of travelers with a budget above 40,000 rubles per person grew from 33% in 2015 to 55% in 2016.
The segment of independent travelers decreased less than the segment of organized
Due to the reduction in the total number of outbound tourists, there was a significant redistribution of the ratio in favor of independent travel.
The number of independent travellers in 2016 decreased by 16% compared to 2015. But due to the fact that the number of organized travellers decreased much more - by 36% over the same period, independent tourists now occupy 33% of the total structure of the outbound tourist market, whereas a year earlier they were only 27%, and in 2013 Year - 23%.
Analysis of the factors of choice of independent travelers shows that - in contrary to popular belief - the first place belongs not to saving factor, but to getting the maximum of impressions for money. Independent tourists are more likely to seek high services and only in half of the cases stay in hotels, often choosing hostels and minimum starry. Travel longer than two weeks or choosing short trips for several days is more typical for independent travellers, while the most typical duration for organized tourists is 1.5-2 weeks.
Independent tourists often travel alone, more often use a car on a trip, are more athletic, often choose extreme sports.
Organized tourists appreciate "easy logistics" and travel without surprises - this, among other things, guarantees fewer difficulties with a foreign language.
