 Wide support for Lords reform, but it is not a priority, say the public in Ipsos poll

There is broad public support for House of Lords reform, but very few think it is a priority according to a new Ipsos poll, even among Liberal Democrat voters.

Overall, around eight in ten (79%) Britons support the idea of reforming the House of Lords, however just 7% believe it should be a priority, with 72% saying there are other more important things the government should concentrate on. Support for reform is highest among Liberal Democrats at 87% and lowest among their Coalition partners, Conservative supporters, at 75%. However, most voters of all parties say even though they support reform it is not an immediate priority – 74% of Liberal Democrats, 74% of Labour voters and 70% of Conservatives.

Around one in six people (16%) say they do not support reforming the House of Lords at all.

Head of Political Research at Ipsos, Gideon Skinner, said:

 “Although a clear majority like the idea of Lords reform, we know that the economy is by some way the number one priority for the British public, while concern about unemployment is growing.  What’s remarkable is the consistency across all age groups, classes, and party support who say there are more important things for the government to be concentrating on.”
