Ipsos Encyclopedia - Independent Samples

Measurements made on two different sets of random items (respondents, cases) as part of testing a hypothesis.

Definition

Measurements made on two different sets of random items (respondents, cases) as part of testing a hypothesis. In other words two samples represent two non-overlapping populations and hence there is no single item (case, respondent) that belongs to more than one of the sample. An example of two independent samples can be males and females.
