A Moderator is the person who leads (but does not influence the outcome of) group discussions and/or in-depth interviews. Moderators are trained to follow best practices of qualitative research (i.e. avoid asking leading/biasing questions, facilitating participation from shy/reticent respondents and/or managing respondents who try to monopolize the discussion, etc.). Moderators must have a broad understanding of the subject matter at hand (i.e. knowledge of the industry, business practices, companies, and brands involved in the research), and may also be trained in special interviewing techniques (e.g. Projective Techniques). The Moderator is also often the same person who writes the Discussion Guide and the Final Report of findings.
