The Economist/ Ipsos MORI June 2015 Issues index – immigration returns to the top of the list of most important issues facing Britain
The June Economist/Ipsos MORI Issues Index shows that approaching half (45%) of the public mention immigration as among the most important issues facing Britain – a five percentage point increase since May, as this issue returns to the top of the list of most important issues.
In doing so, it pushes the NHS into second place – two fifths (40%) mention the NHS, an issue which has, with immigration, been vying for the position of the most important issue facing Britain throughout 2015.
Those who are most likely to mention immigration as among the most important issues are those aged 55-64; 54% of whom mention it, compared with just 29% of those aged 18-24. It is also more likely to be mentioned by those in lower social grades – half (51%) of C2DEs mention it compared with two fifths (40%) of ABC1s. Concern also rises to 59% of Conservative voters, compared with just 37% of Labour voters.
There are key differences by area in terms of concern about the NHS – from 49% in the South of England to just a quarter (24%) in the Midlands, compared with 40% overall.
A quarter (26%) now mention the economy, the lowest percentage to do so since March 2008. Similarly the percentage mentioning unemployment (18%) is the lowest since December 2008.
16% mention education, and the same percentage mentions poverty/inequality. While just 13% mention Europe as among the most important issues facing Britain, this is the highest percentage to do so since June 2005 – and there is great variation by demographic groups, with concern rising to 26% of ABC1s aged 55+. Concern about crime remains at the historic low of 9%.
Ipsos MORI's Issues Index is conducted monthly and provides an overview of the key issues concerning the country. Ipsos MORI interviewed a representative quota sample of 963 adults aged 18+ across Great Britain. The questions are spontaneous - i.e. respondents are not prompted with any answers. Ipsos MORI's Capibus vehicle was used for this survey. Interviews were conducted face-to-face in-home between 5th-15th June in 163 sampling points across Great Britain. Data are weighted to match the profile of the population.
