[EVENT] Unmet need for social care

End of project presentation of findings and discussion

With care for older people rising up the policy agenda and generating widespread debate, we invite you to come and hear the findings of our research project exploring unmet need for adult social care for older people and discuss the implications with our panel.

The event will be chaired by Rt. Hon Professor Paul Burstow, City University London and former Minister of State for Care Services in the Department of Health. Our panel will include Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Independent Age; Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK; and Sarah Pickup OBE, Deputy Chief Executive of the Local Government Association.

The event is free, open to anyone and would be of particular interest to those involved in planning or delivering care services or supporting the interests of older people and their carers, as well as researchers.

It will be held in a central London location, a few minutes’ walk from Moorgate and Liverpool Street stations. Registration will open at 10am for a 10.30am start, and the event will finish with lunch at 1pm.

Background

The National Institute for Health Research School for Social Care Research (NIHR SSCR) has funded Ipsos MORI and NatCen Social Research to work with Independent Age and Age UK on a project exploring unmet need for social care among older people living in their own homes.  The research focuses on the nature of unmet need for social care, factors which predict unmet need, the causes of unmet needs, and links between unmet need and well-being.

There are two parts to the research:

  • analysis of survey data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health Survey for England
  • in-depth narrative interviews with older people to explore pathways into care and their experiences of unmet need.

We will present findings from both parts and draw together the implications.  There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions to the researchers and to engage in discussion with our panel about what the findings mean for practice. A buffet lunch will be provided at the end.
