Ipsos Media Atlas study reveals the latest newspaper landscape in Hong Kong: With the decline in readership of print dailies (from 76% in 2006 to 69% in 2012), digital opens up a new market. Online newspapers extend the reach of dailies, with a peak at 79% in July 2011-June 2012. Digital newspaper readers make up a greater share of all newspaper readers, especially among the young generation - 43% of 20-29 years old read dailies via computers or mobile devices yesterday (vs. 29% of the 12-64 years old). The young generation has moved faster from print to digital and we would expect the change to accelerate.
Marketers and media specialists need to keep a close eye on the vibrant media trends and consumption habits. Newspapers need to adapt to the on the go style of their readers and embrace digital platforms to connect with them.
