COVID-19 MENA Consumer Sentiment Tracker

A report on understanding attitudes, behaviors and future expectations in KSA, UAE, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, and Lebanon.

With the results of the third wave of COVID-19 Consumer Sentiment Tracker in MENA between April 3 and April 6, 2020, the Coronavirus threat is least regarded in Egypt where 15% of the population does not take it seriously at all. However, the threat is perceived more seriously in UAE and KSA.

Also, we witness a decline across the entire region in how seriously people see those around them taking the threat, most significantly in Lebanon where it dropped from 53% one week ago to 30% today.

On the other hand, as the majority in MENA still fear the virus will have an impact on their finances, mostly in Jordan and Lebanon, they agree they will spend less and save more due as a result of the COVID-19 repercussions.

As for the Levels of trust in the media, they remain stagnant, aside from Lebanon which is on the decline.

Also in Lebanon, people are the least convinced things will return to normal by June, while in Morocco they are a little more optimistic.

  1. Attitudes Towards Pandemic More Relaxed Across The Region  MENA witnesses a decline in how seriously people are taking the pandemic, dropping heavily in Lebanon and Egypt.
  2.  Rising Concerns Towards Personal Financial Impact of Covid-19 Resulting in Lower Tendency To Spend  Majority expect the virus to impact their finances, with expectations escalating in UAE. Additionally, attitudes shifting from spending to saving in case of emergencies throughout the region.
  3. Despite Financial Difficulties, Lockdowns are Seen as Opportunity to Bring Families Closer Together  Long durations spent at home due to the disease are seen as bringing families and friends closer together.
