ACT General Health Survey

Frequently asked questions

What is the ACT General Health Survey?

The ACT General Health Survey is an annual survey conducted in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) since 2007. It collects information about the health and lifestyle of ACT residents.

Who conducts the ACT General Health Survey?

The 2025 survey is being conducted by Ipsos on behalf of ACT Health and Community Services.

Why is the survey conducted?

The ongoing collection of information on health status and behaviours helps policymakers and healthcare providers to plan and implement programs and policies that improve health outcomes.

National health surveys tend to only include a small number of people from the ACT and so can’t always be used to accurately describe the health status of the ACT population.

What areas of health does the survey cover?

The survey explores a wide range of health topics, including:

  • physical activity
  • nutrition
  • weight status
  • self-rated health and disability
  • personal wellbeing and social support
  • mental health
  • e-cigarette, tobacco and alcohol use.

How often is the survey conducted?

The survey is conducted every year to monitor changes in the population's health over time.

How is the survey conducted?

The 2025 survey will be conducted via telephone interviews. Participants are randomly selected to make sure the sample represents the ACT population. How long will this take? The survey will take around 20 minutes to complete.

Who can participate in the survey?

ACT residents who are 18 years or older are eligible. If selected, you will receive a phone call from a trained interviewer inviting you to participate.

How did you obtain my number?

Your mobile number was randomly selected from the Integrated Public Number Database (IPND), which contains most Australian phone numbers. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (the ACMA) has authorised the use of the IPND for this study (ACMA reference ACMA2025/338). For more information, visit: acma.gov.au/accessing-integrated-public-number-database

Is participation in the survey mandatory?

No, participation is voluntary. Your involvement is strongly encouraged as it helps provide a more accurate picture of the community’s health needs.

Are my survey responses confidential?

Yes, any information collected is kept confidential and used only for planning and research purposes. Results are published in aggregate form, such as by gender and by age group. No personally identifying information such as your name, mobile number, address, email or date of birth is collected for this survey.

How is information from the survey used?

Information collected from the survey informs health policy decisions, resource allocation and public health initiatives. Results from previous surveys are publicly available on HealthStats ACT. If you have further questions, please contact ACT Health and Community Services at  [email protected] or call the Ipsos ACT General Health Survey helpdesk on 1800 034 523.
