Bulgaria – A nation in crisis
For Bulgaria, the year 2022 was marked by the war in Ukraine, political crisis, and growing inflation. The influence of these factors will overflow into the coming year.
The fourth parliamentary elections in less than two years scored the lowest turnout ever registered in Bulgarian history – a mere 39% of voters – a clear sign of apathy and resignation.
And, as the government increasingly pledges allegiance to the West, anti-globalist and pro-Russian sentiments seem to be gaining ground. The stronger the focus on liberal values, the stauncher the backlash by various groups, whose byword is intolerance. The two extremes are occupied by small but vocal groups who fervently defend their positions – pro-vaxxers vs. anti-vaxxers, pro-Russians vs. pro-Western supporters.
In between, we have the mass of people who are mostly preoccupied with worries about their immediate physical survival and loss of identity. The media environment fuels their apprehensions and further intensifies the sense of hopelessness.
And, while the latest census recorded that the population has shrunk by well over 10% in just a decade, the Covid crisis has drawn thousands of Bulgarian emigrants back home – a glimmer of hope for a rapidly-aging nation with increasingly depopulated rural areas. The political, economic and energy crises are merely the tip of an iceberg, whose foundation is fertile ground for values crisis and growing societal apathy. A deeply disoriented society seeks its mainstay in its roots and the feeling of belonging to a community.

In all this, for business, the crisis provides an opportunity for brands offering a sense of safety and protection, of calmness, comfort and meaningfulness. Consumers want a more sheltered, slow-paced lifestyle and quality time spent with their loved ones. They turn towards local products and hand-crafted articles. On the other hand, the spiraling inflation shrinks their shopping baskets. Some react to the current circumstances by avoiding consumerism, while others adopt a deal-hunting strategy or buy value brands.
Overall, Bulgarians feel they are facing a very uncertain future.
