Alberta Workplace Smoking Ban

Two-Thirds (68%) Of Albertans Would Support A Workplace Smoking Ban

Edmonton, AB - A new Ipsos-Reid poll conducted on behalf of The Campaign for a Smoke-Free Alberta shows that 68% of Alberta residents would support provincial legislation to make all workplaces smoke-free, including bars, restaurants and gaming establishments. This includes 55% who say they would "strongly support" such legislation and 13% who would "somewhat support" it. In contrast, one-third of Albertans (32%) say they would oppose the legislation - 22% say they would "strongly oppose" while 10% would "somewhat oppose" it.
  • Support for the legislation is fairly steady across the province ranging from 67% in the City of Edmonton, 72% in Calgary and 64% elsewhere in the province.
  • There is also very little difference by gender on this question with 66% of men supporting the legislation along with 70% of women.
  • Results are also fairly consistent across age groups with 70% of those aged 18-34, 66% of those aged 35-54 and 70% of those aged 55+ saying they would support the legislation.

These are the findings of an Ipsos-Reid poll conducted on the Alberta Reid Express between January 20th and January 25th, 2005. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 800 adult Albertans. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 1773.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Alberta population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Alberta population according to the 2001 Census data.
