Albertans' Views on Stockwell Day Lawsuit Settlement January 2001
Albertans Strongly Disfavour Government Paying for Stockwell Day's Court Settlement (76% Disapprove of the Alberta Government Covering Costs)
Calgary, AB - The results of an exclusive Ipsos-Reid/Globe and Mail/CTV poll show that Albertans are quite familiar with Stockwell Day's recent legal problems - fully 83 percent of adults in the province have heard, seen or read something about Day's defamation lawsuit or out of court settlement recently. Additionally, the survey shows that Alberta taxpayers are far from enthusiastic about the prospect of "picking up the tab" for the former Provincial Treasurer's "day in court". Three-quarters (76%) of those interviewed in the January survey say they disapprove of the Alberta government paying for expenses arising from Stockwell Day's defamation lawsuit, with six-in-ten (61%) "offering "strong disapproval". In contrast, only 22 percent of the province offer any degree of support for the government covering Day's legal expenses.
- Awareness of Day's court case and settlement tends to increase with the age, income and education of Albertans.
- Disapproval for the provincial government covering Day's legal expenses is higher among women (79%) than men (72%), and tends to decline modestly with the age and income levels of survey respondents.
These are the findings of an Ipsos-Reid/Globe and Mail/CTV poll conducted between January 11th and 16th, 2001. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 802 adult Albertans. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 177 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire population in Alberta been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual provincial population according to the 1996 Census data.
