Considerations For The November 2006 Toronto Mayoralty Race

Toronto, ON - With nomination papers being picked up and filed by some potential candidates for the Toronto Mayoral chair in the city-wide election to be held in November of this year, a new Ipsos Reid survey conducted in the City of Toronto for The National Post/Global News/CFRB reports that incumbent Mayor David Miller currently leads with 50% of the decided votes. And almost six in ten voters in Toronto (56%) believe David Miller has done a good job and deserves to be re-elected (44% feel he does not deserve to be re-elected).

However, when former Toronto Police Chief and now Provincial Commissioner of Emergency Management Julian Fantino is added to the ballot, he becomes a potent challenger to the Mayor with 39% of the decided vote.

This survey was conducted amidst issues of crime dominating the news and recent poll findings by Ipsos Reid that reveal crime is the most important issue on the municipal agenda for Torontonians.

Other declared candidates such as City Councillors Jane Pitfield (5%) and Rob Ford (3%) and potential candidate former Liberal MP Dennis Mills (3%) attract much lower levels of initial support.

The poll indicates that 24% of voters in Toronto are currently undecided as to whom they will vote for.
