Eight Months After Ontario Election,
McGuinty Liberals (45%) Continue Honeymoon
Toronto, ON - Eight months after a provincial election that saw Dalton McGuinty re-elected as Premier of Ontario with a majority Liberal government, a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted exclusively on behalf of CanWest News Service and Global Television finds that the Liberals still appear to be honeymooning with Ontarians and enjoy a considerable lead over the Tories.
Despite a flagging economy, manufacturing woes and a GM plant shut-down, the Liberals would likely win a majority government, as big as or bigger than they did in October 2007, when they were returned to office.
If a provincial election were held tomorrow, the Liberal Party of Ontario would receive the support of 45% of decided voters (up 3 points since election), while the Progressive Conservatives, led by John Tory, would receive 29% of the vote (down 3 points since election).
The New Democratic Party, whose leader, Howard Hampton, recently announced that he will be stepping down as head of the party, would receive 15% of the vote (down 2 points since election). Meanwhile, the Green Party, under Frank de Jong, would be supported by 11% of Ontarians (up 3 points since election). Six percent (6%) of Ontarian voters remain undecided. In fact, when it comes to vote support in the GTA, the Grits (48%) enjoy an even greater lead over the Tories (27%). Furthermore, in every key demographic (region, age, gender), the Liberals lead the Progressive Conservatives by a safe margin.
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted exclusively for CanWest News Service and Global Television from June 10 to June 19, 2008. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 803 adults living in Ontario was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 1773.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population living in Ontario been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure that the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Ontarian population according to Census data.
