The Fight For Edmonton Centre
Edmonton, AB - Anne McLellan is no stranger to tight races. She has won her seat by less than 750 votes in each of the last two federal elections. A new Ipsos Reid/Edmonton Journal poll of Edmonton Centre residents suggests that regardless of which candidate wins this election, the margin of votes will be likely be small once again. Currently, Lauri Hawn the Conservative Party Candidate, is in the lead with 42% of the decided vote while Anne McLellan is seven points behind with 35% of the decided vote. Although she is behind in the polls, a majority of (60%) Edmonton Centre constituents say they approve of Anne McLellan's performance as their Member of Parliament and a similar, but smaller number, (54%) say she deserves to be re-elected. But Anne McLellan's good performance may not be enough this time as only 25% say their decision of who to vote for is based on the candidate while a majority (55%) say it is based on the party's stand on the issues.;p>
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted for the Edmonton Journal between January 9th and January 11th, 2006. A total of 600 adult residents of the federal riding Edmonton Centre were surveyed, yielding results which are accurate to within +/-4.0% (19 times out of 20). The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. The data were statistically weighted to ensure that the sample's age and gender composition reflects that of the actual population in the riding according to the 2001 Census.
