As Final Week Of Parliament Winds Down, Post-Convention Shine For Liberals Appears To Have Dimmed

Liberals (36%, -2 Points) And Conservatives (34%, +2 Points) Competitively Positioned For Possible Spring Writ Drop

Toronto, ON - A new Ipsos Reid survey conducted during the final week of Parliament indicates that the post-convention shine initially enjoyed by Stephane Dion and the Liberal Party has dimmed somewhat. Amidst the chatter of a potential spring election, the Liberals (36%, +2 points from a December 5-7th, 2006 survey) and the Conservatives (34%, +2 points) are competitively positioned, with the New Democratic Party (13%, unchanged) and the Green Party (5%, unchanged) registering further down the ladder. In Quebec, the Bloc Quebecois (44%, +1 point) are well entrenched as the leading federal party, while the Liberals seem to have a firm hold on second (31%, +1 point) with an 18 point lead over the Conservatives (13%, -5 points).

Regional Vote Tables

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted for CanWest News Service/Global News and fielded from December 12-14th, 2006. For this survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1004 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the aggregate results are considered accurate to within 177 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within each sub-grouping of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data
