Grit Post-Convention Lead Evaporates-Tories And Grits Neck-In-Neck

Federal Quebec Vote Tightens With Provincial Contest Underway

Toronto, ON - In the wake of a Conservative Party sponsored negative advertising campaign that has pounded Liberal Leader Stephane Dion and the opposition Liberals over the past month, the post Liberal leadership convention bounce has evaporated with both parties now virtually neck and neck in voter support.

A new Ipsos Reid national poll conducted for CanWest/Global News reports the Conservatives with 36% support (+3 points from a mid-January survey) and the Liberals with 34% support (-3 points). Trailing further behind the front-runners are the NDP with 13% support (unchanged), the Bloc Quebecois with 9% nationally (unchanged) and the Green Party with 8% (+3 points).

In the province of Quebec, the Liberals (25%, -3 points) and the Conservatives (21%, +3 points) are nearly tied, as the Bloc Quebecois (38%, unchanged) continues to hold a commanding lead.,

Regional Vote Tables (Major Parties)

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted for CanWest News Service/Global News and fielded from February 20-22nd, 2007. For this survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1001 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the aggregate results are considered accurate to within 177 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within each sub-grouping of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data.
