As Liberals Gather in Montreal, Canadians Assess the Man,
The Party and the Policies

Part 1: Justin Trudeau
Toronto, ON - As Liberals from across the country gather in Montreal for their biennial policy convention, Ipsos Reid and CTV News have asked Canadians to assess the Liberals on the man leading the party, Justin Trudeau, the Party itself, and the policies that are up for debate at the convention. In the first of this three-part series, Canadians share their opinions on Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

The results of the poll reveal that Justin Trudeau has momentum on some key measures and trumps the other two main party leaders--Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair--on the vast majority of leadership attributes tested.

Momentum for Trudeau as Half of Canadians Now Say He's Ready to be Prime Minister...

Canadians appear to be warming to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau as more now than two months ago say that they share his values and that he's ready to be Prime Minister. A majority (54%) now `agrees' (16% strongly/38% somewhat) that they `share Justin Trudeau and the Liberal's values when it comes to where Canada should be headed', up 6 points since early December 2013. Nearly half (46%) `disagree' (20% strongly/26% somewhat), down 6 points. While Canadians from every region are more likely to say this, the biggest gains have been made in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (+18), Alberta (+9) and Ontario (+6).

Further, half (48%) of Canadians now `agree' (14% strongly/34% somewhat) that `Justin Trudeau is ready to be Prime Minister, which is a marked improvement of 9 points since early December 2013 while the other half (52%) `disagree' (26% strongly/26% somewhat), down 9 points. The most favourable gains for Trudeau have been made in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (+22), Ontario (+10), Quebec (+10) and Alberta (+9).

Justin Trudeau has demonstrated that he is willing to take a position on controversial issues - such as the legalization of marijuana and expelling Liberal Senators from the Liberal caucus. Six in ten (60%) Canadians `agree' (17% strongly/43% somewhat) that `Justin Trudeau's policies and ideas are innovative and forward thinking', up 8 points while a minority (40%) `disagrees' (17% strongly/23% somewhat) that they are (down 8 points). In this regard, residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (+20), British Columbia (+12), and Ontario (+7) have seen this most movement in their views.

The results of this poll also show that half (50%) of Canadians `agree' (15% strongly/35% somewhat) that they `trust Justin Trudeau and the Liberals to do a good job of managing Canada's economy', up 6 points since December 2013, while half (50%) `disagree' (23% strongly/27% somewhat), down 6 points. This is usually viewed as a policy playing field dominated by the Conservatives but is now fairly balanced. Residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (+19) and Albertans (+11) have seen the most change in the last two months.

Canadians Assess Party Leaders on Key Leadership Attributes, Trudeau Leads on Vast Majority...

Canadians were asked to assess the Party Leaders on 11 key leadership attributes and determine which of the three leaders - Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, or NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair - is best described by each trait. The results show that Justin Trudeau leads on most attributes, with the exception of "best to lead during tough economic times" (Harper) and "having a hidden agenda" (Harper).

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between February 14th to 19th, 2014 on behalf of CTV News. For this survey, a sample of 1,036 Canadians from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 3.5 percentage points had all Canadians adults been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
