Most (87%) Torontonians Say Politics Get In the Way of
Getting Things Done

Nearly Half (45%) Strongly Agree

Toronto, ON - Following the municipal election, Torontonians will be looking to their new leaders to get down work and put the politics behind them, believing that the city gets so bogged down in politics that little gets accomplished, according to a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of Global News.

Most (87%) Torontonians `agree' (45% strongly/43% somewhat) that `politics get in the way of things getting done' in Toronto, Just one in ten (13%) `disagrees' (2% strongly/11% somewhat) with this assertion, perhaps believing that the sparring, seemingly endless debate and political wrangling are part and parcel of the democratic process.

While yesterday's release showed that residents of Scarborough were by far most likely to believe their region of the city is neglected compared to others, today's data show that there is near consensus across the city that politics interfere with getting business accomplished in Toronto. Nearly nine in ten residents of North York (89%), Scarborough (88%), York/East York (87%), Etobicoke (87%) and old Toronto/downtown (85%) agree.

Interestingly, those aged 55 and older are most likely (90%) to agree that politics get in the way of getting this done, followed by those aged 35 to 54 (88%) and 18 to 34 (82%).

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between September 23rd and 26th, 2014 on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,252 Torontonians (of which 1,105 are decided voters) from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/ 3.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Torontonian adults been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
