National survey reveals most young adults have confidence in science

Yet lack of confidence in math, the persuasion of social media influencers, and the difficulty to delineate between real and fake information can keep many young adults from making science-based decisions

Toronto, ON, December 8, 2021 – Ipsos is pleased to present findings from a survey conducted on behalf of The Canada Foundation for Innovation, in partnership with Acfas, that sought to explore the attitudes 18-24-year-old Canadians have toward science and the conditions and people who shape them.

Results of this research have shown that when it comes to forming attitudes and opinions on issues ranging from COVID-19 vaccines to environmental sustainability, the majority of young adults in Canada use scientific information to guide their actions. Some specific cohorts, however, either question or ignore science, which impacts their attitudes about those science-based issues. These are just some of the findings from this national survey. Detailed results from this survey can be found here.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between October 12th and 26th, 2021, on behalf of The Canada Foundation for Innovation, in partnership with Acfas. For this survey, a sample of 1,500 young Canadians aged 18 to 24 was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting by age, gender and region were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian youth population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 2.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18 to 24 been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population.
