Calgary Mayor and Council Have Widespread Public Approval

81% Approval for Mayor; 65% Approval for Council

Calgary, AB - A new Ipsos poll shows that Calgary's Mayor and Calgary's City Council each enjoy public approval numbers that would be the envy of most municipal, provincial and federal politicians across the country.

Mayoral Approval

The numbers are very good for Mayor Naheed Nenshi. Eight-in-ten (81%) Calgary residents say they approve of the overall performance of Calgary's Mayor (36% strongly, 44% somewhat). Only two-in-ten (19%) residents say they disapprove of the performance of Calgary's Mayor (8% strongly, 11% somewhat).

  • Mayoral approval is high across the board, but especially high with women (88% vs. 73% among men), younger residents (92% among 18-34 years vs. 78% among 35-54 years, 71% among 55+ years) and renters (86% vs. 78% among homeowners).
  • By quadrant, Mayoral approval is highest in the Northeast (94%) and lowest in the Northwest (73%).

City Council Approval

The numbers are also good for City Council, just not quite as good as for the Mayor. Two-thirds (65%) of Calgarians say they approve of the overall performance of Calgary's City Council (7% strongly, 58% somewhat). Roughly one-third (35%) say they disapprove of the performance of Calgary's City Council (8% strongly, 27% somewhat).

  • Similar to the Mayor, City Council approval is higher with women (73% vs. 58% among men), younger residents (77% among 18-34 years vs. 61% among 35-54 years, 56% among 55+ years) and renters (71% vs. 62% among homeowners).
  • By quadrant, Council approval is highest in the Northeast (80%) and lowest in the Southeast (59%).

These are the findings of an Ipsos poll of 507 adult City of Calgary residents conducted online using Ipsos' national online household panel between June 18 and 23, 2015. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional, age and sex composition reflects that of the actual City of Calgary population according to 2011 Census data. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 5.0 percentage points had all City of Calgary adults been surveyed. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
