Despite Receiving Canadians' Approval on Policies, Only Slim Majority (55%) Agrees Trudeau Government Has Clear Plan for the Future of Canada
Toronto, ON - Despite receiving broad approval from Canadians on a host of policy areas, only a slim majority (55%) of Canadians believe the Trudeau Government has a clear plan for the future of Canada, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News.
At least one half of Canadians approve of the Trudeau government's performance in each of the 17 policy areas tested in the poll, ranging from 50% on the low end to 75% on the high end. Generally speaking, the government is receiving high approval ratings on policies relating to Canada's relationships and international reputation, but lower approval ratings on economic and financial files.
The chart below outlines each policy area or approach tested, and the proportion of Canadians who approve (strongly/somewhat) or disapprove (strongly/somewhat) of the Trudeau government's performance on that file:
| Policy/Approach | % Approve (strongly/somewhat) | % disapprove (strongly/somewhat) |
| Managing Canada's relationship with the United States | 75% (27%/48%) | 25% (9%/15%) |
| Managing Canada's international reputation | 73% (27%/46%) | 27% (11%/16%) |
| Keeping Canadians safe and secure | 68% (18%/50%) | 32% (13%/20%) |
| Managing issues concerning First Nations and aboriginal people | 65% (21%/43%) | 35% (13%/23%) |
| Running an ethical and honest government | 64% (19%/45%) | 36% (13%/23%) |
| Providing honest and open government | 61% (23%/38%) | 39% (15%/24%) |
| Taking on tough but important issues | 61% (14%/46%) | 39% (16%/23%) |
| Dealing with climate change | 60% (15%/45%) | 40% (14%/26%) |
| Listening to Canadians and responding to their needs | 59% (21%/38%) | 41% (17%/23%) |
| Fighting terrorism | 59% (13%/46%) | 41% (15%/26%) |
| Helping the middle class | 58% (15%/43%) | 42% (17%/25%) |
| Managing Canada's economy | 58% (10%/47%) | 42% (20%/22%) |
| Managing the federal budget | 54% (9%/45%) | 46% (21%/25%) |
| Reforming Canada's election system | 54% (9%/44%) | 46% (15%/31%) |
| Managing natural resource projects such as pipelines | 51% (13%/38%) | 49% (17%/31%) |
| Creating jobs | 51% (11%/40%) | 49% (17%/33%) |
| Spending taxpayers' money wisely | 50% (9%/40%) | 50% (25%/25%) |
Despite receiving relatively high approval ratings on most policy areas tested, only a slim majority (55%) `agrees' (16% strongly/39% somewhat) that the `Trudeau government has a clear plan for the future of Canada', while 45% `disagree' (15% strongly/30% somewhat) that they have a clear plan.
Moreover, it appears that most Canadians are willing to give the government the benefit of the doubt, despite registering only soft agreement on knowing what the government's priorities are: 53% `agree' (11% strongly/41% somewhat) that they have a `clear idea of the priorities of the Trudeau government', while nearly half (47%) `disagree' (13% strongly/34% somewhat) that they have a clear idea of the government's priorities.
Despite this, two in three (63%) `agree' (18% strongly/45% somewhat) that `the Trudeau government has great ideas for how to improve Canada', while roughly one in three (37%) `disagree' (15% strongly/22% somewhat), suggesting that a lack of knowledge about the governments priorities among many doesn't necessarily prevent some Canadians from believing the government has good ideas for how to improve Canada.
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between October 11 to 14, 2016, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians from Ipsos' online panel was interviewed online. Weighting160was then160employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval.160 In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/ - 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadian adults been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error
