Six in Ten (60%) Canadians Think Trudeau's Handling of Allegations of Sexual Assault against Liberal MPs Was Appropriate

Toronto, ON - Six in ten (60%) Canadians `agree' (13% strongly/47% somewhat) that Justin Trudeau's handling of the allegations of sexual assault against two members of his party was appropriate', according to a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of Global News. Conversely, four in ten (40%) `disagree' (15% strongly/25% somewhat) that he handled the situation appropriately at the time.

Two female NDP MPs brought forth allegations of a sexual nature against two male Liberal MPs, which caused Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau to take swift action and kick the two MPs out of his caucus for what he called "serious personal misconduct". While some applauded Trudeau's quick decision and zero-policy stance, others were critical of the move which they felt did not give due process to the accused. An investigation is now underway and Parliament has since been struggling with how it will handle allegations of this nature against MPs in the future.

  • Quebecers (66%) and Atlantic Canadians (65%) were most likely to believe that Justin Trudeau's handling of the situation was appropriate, followed by those living in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (59%), BC (58%), Ontario (58%) and Alberta (51%).
  • Women (61%) and men (59%) were equally similar in their levels of support for Trudeau's handling of the situation, as were those aged 55+ (61%), 35 to 54 (60%) or 18 to 34 (59%).

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between December 16 to 19, 2014 on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Canadians from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 3.5 percentage points had all Canadians adults been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
