[PRESS RELEASE] - International Women's Day 2025

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually to champion the achievement of women and to advocate gender equality. This year's theme, 'Accelerate Action,' calls us to not only recognise progress, but also to actively engage in overcoming the remaining barriers to gender equality.

Indonesians Are Optimistic About Progress in Gender Equality

Jakarta, 7 Maret 2025 - Ipsosone of the world’s leading market research companies, has released its latest report on gender equality in celebration of International Women’s Day 2025. The report highlights key insights into global, Indonesian, and Asian perspectives on women’s rights, leadership, and their role in society.

Gender Equality in Indonesia: Optimism Above the Global Average

Survey results reveal that the majority of Indonesians believe gender equality has made significant progress. In fact, Indonesia recorded higher numbers compared to other countries worldwide.

Key Findings from the Report:

  • 76% of Indonesians believe that gender equality has been achieved, significantly higher than the global average of 50%.
  • Seven out of ten Indonesians agree that workplaces and governments would function better if more women held leadership positions. This sentiment is higher than the global average.
  • Indonesians are more optimistic than other countries that there will be significant progress in gender equality over the next five years.

Generational Gap in Views on Gender Roles

Despite the high optimism, the survey also highlights generational differences in perspectives on gender roles. Gen Z tends to hold more traditional views, with a higher level of agreement that men who stay home to take care of their children are considered "less of a man" compared to other generations. Additionally, there is an increasing trend of men agreeing with traditional gender roles, indicating that generational shifts in gender equality perceptions are still evolving.

Commenting on the findings, Rai Falihah, Associate Director of Ipsos in Indonesia, stated:

"Our latest report reflect that Indonesians are increasingly confident that women now have better access to opportunities for equality. However, challenges remain that need to be addressed to ensure sustainable equality across various aspects of life. Awareness of the importance of women's leadership and equal roles within households must continue to be strengthened to drive real and lasting change."

Methodology

This survey was conducted online from December 20, 2024, to January 3, 2025, with 23,765 adults across 33 countries. In Indonesia, the survey was conducted among 500 adults aged 21-74.
