Bringing Canadians Home: The Evacuation From Lebanon, Part III
Two-Thirds (64%) Say The Extent Of The Israeli Response To Events Is Justified
Toronto, ON- According to a new Ipsos Reid survey conducted for CanWest Global, two-thirds of Canadians (64%) would describe the extent of the Israeli combat actions in Lebanon as "justified" (20% "completely justified"/44% "somewhat justified").
Further, considering the opposing sides in this conflict, six in ten Canadians (63%) feel it is up to "those who kidnapped the Israeli soldiers" to make a major compromise in order to have a cease fire - 37% feel the "israeli government" should be the ones to make such a compromise.
When asked about the United Nations proposal to "insert a multi-national peace-keeping force along the Lebanese-Israeli border in order to cause a cease-fire", just over half (56%) of Canadians say they would support the "Canadian armed forces being part of this operation" (21% "strongly support"). A large minority (44%), though, would oppose such measures (22% "strongly oppose").
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on the evening of July 20th, 2006 for CanWest/ Global News. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1023 adult Canadians were interviewed via an on-line survey. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within +/-3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to the 2001 Census data.
