British Columbians Oppose Trophy Hunting of Bears in the Great Bear Rainforest

Vancouver, BC - A new telephone survey of 800 British Columbians, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of the Humane Society International/Canada, has found that British Columbians are opposed to the provincial government permitting trophy hunting of bears in the Great Bear Rainforest. More than three-quarters of British Columbians (78%) are opposed, with 59% being strongly opposed. Just 18% of British Columbians say they support the provincial government permitting trophy hunting of bears in the Great Bear Rainforest. Of these, 7% strongly support it and 11% somewhat support it.

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted January 13-18, 2009. For the survey, a provincially representative sample of 800 randomly-selected adults aged 18 and over from throughout British Columbia was interviewed by telephone via Ipsos' BC Reid Express omnibus. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate within 1773.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population in the province been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/gender composition reflects that of the actual British Columbia population according to data from Statistics Canada's 2006 Census.
