Calgary's Upcoming Mayorlty Election
Incumbent Mayor Dave Bronconnier A Heavy Favourite
Calgary, AB - The results of a new Ipsos Reid survey show that Mayor Dave Bronconnier is a clear favourite to retain his hold on the mayor's office in Calgary's upcoming municipal election. Nearly half (47%) of Calgarians say that they would be most likely to vote for Bronconnier as mayor. No other potential contender has more than 2% support at this point. However at this early stage in the campaign, fully one-third (35%) of Calgarians remain undecided.
Mayor Bronconnier's edge over other mayoralty candidates is likely at least partially attributable to his higher name awareness among Calgarians. Four-in-ten (42%) Calgarians are able to name Bronconnier on a top-of-mind basis when asked to name possible candidates for mayor. Next best is Alnoor Kassam at 10% awareness. No other potential contender even achieves 1% awareness.
Calgarians are currently backing Mayor Bronconnier as the most likely mayoralty candidate to win the upcoming municipal election. Seven-in-ten (70%) Calgarians say they think Dave Bronconnier is the most likely to win the mayoralty race. Sandy Jenkins is next best at just 2%.
In other survey questions, Calgarians are generally positive about Mayor Bronconnier's performance as mayor. Three-quarters (76%) say they approve of his overall performance and seven-in-ten (71%) say that he has the City of Calgary on the right track. Calgary's City Council also gets favourable reviews with a 70% approval rating from Calgarians.
Transportation and infrastructure tops Calgarians' issues agenda. Over half (54%) of Calgarians say that this is most important issue facing Calgary today. Further down the list are housing and crime/safety - slightly more than a third (38% and 34% respectively) of those interviewed say that these are the most important issues facing Calgary today.
These are findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between September 11th and 13th 2007. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 400 adult Calgarians. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within +/-4.9% points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire population in Calgary been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's age/sex composition reflects that of the actual city population according to Statistics Canada Census data.
