Canadian Small Business Owners Planning Growth or Expansion

One third (34%) of small business owners plan to grow, one-in-ten (14%) say they will need new credit

Toronto, ON - Many small businesses in Canada are poised to grow in 2010 as one in three (34%) small-business owners say they are planning on expanding or growing their business over the next six months, according to a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of RBC. In addition, 26% of small business owners say their business is at the start-up stage.

Growth for small business often means the need for credit and 14% of small-business owners (31% of those who plan on expanding) say they will require new credit over the next six months. A further 14% are unsure of whether they will need access to new credit.

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted February 2 - 8, 2010, on behalf of RBC. For this survey, a national sample of 1,049 small business owners from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics and ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the Canadian small business population according to Statistics Canada and other data sources, and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. All businesses had fewer than five employees, and annual revenue under $1 million. A survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and a 100% response rate would have an estimated margin of error of +/-3.0 percentage points 19 times out of 20 of what the results would have been had the entire population of small business owners in Canada been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
