Canadians Increasingly Support (72%, + 10 Points) Using Our Ground Troops in Fight against ISIS

But, Opinion Split on Whether Canadian Government is Doing Enough to Defeat ISIS

Toronto, ON -- Canadians are growing increasingly supportive of the use of Canadian soldiers on the ground fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Global News.

Seven in ten (72%) Canadians `agree' (29% strongly/43% somewhat) that they `support the use of Canadian Forces on the ground in a combat mission against ISIS in Iraq and Syria', which is up 10 points from when the question was last posed to Canadians in November, 2015. Conversely, only three in ten (28%) `disagree' (8% strongly/20% somewhat) that they support the use of Canadian boots on the ground, down 10 points.

The increase in support is in part a function of three quarters (74%, up 5 points from March, 2015) of Canadians agreeing (32% strongly/43% somewhat) that `we should do everything possible to prevent ISIS from getting its own state, even if it means putting Canadian soldiers on the ground in Iraq and Syria'. Moreover, a similar proportion (73%) `agrees' (22% strongly/50% somewhat) that `the coalition of allies can win the war against ISIS', although this proportion is unchanged from November.

Canadians Split on Whether Government Doing Enough to Defeat ISIS....

Canadians are nearly evenly split in their agreement (48% -- 7% strongly/40% somewhat) or disagreement (52% -- 16% strongly/37% somewhat) that `the Canadian government is doing enough to defeat ISIS'.

Atlantic Canadians (61%) are by the far the most likely to agree that the government is doing enough. But those living in BC (50%), Ontario (50%), Quebec (47%), Saskatchewan and Manitoba (36%) and Alberta (34%) are much less likely to think so.

While women (49%) and men (46%) don't differ much in their beliefs, those aged 18-34 (53%) are more likely than those aged 35-54 (46%) or 55+ (45%) to believe the government is doing enough to defeat ISIS.

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between July 27 to 29, 2016, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,002 Canadians aged 18+ Ipsos' online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/ - 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadian adults been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
