GTA, TORONTO RESIDENTS GIVE "THUMBS UP" TO POLICE CHIEF JULIAN FANTINO 80% of GTA Residents (78% of Torontonians, 83% of 905) Approve Police Chief's Job Performance
Toronto, ON. According the results of an Ipsos-Reid/Globe and Mail/CFRB/CFTO poll conducted among 400 residents of the Greater Toronto Area, eight in ten (80%) approve of the performance the Julian Fantino, the Chief of Police for the Toronto Police Service. Nearly four in ten (38%) "strongly approve" of Fantino's job performance, while 42% "somewhat approve". One in ten (9%) of those residing in the GTA disapprove (4% strongly, 5% somewhat) of the job Fantino is doing as Chief of Police, while 11% "don't know".

Virtually the same percentage of Torontonians (78%) say they approve (39% strongly, 39% somewhat) of Julian Fantino's performance as Chief of Police. This compares with an October 8th, 1998 poll conducted for CFRB which found that 74% of Torontonians approved of the performance of then Toronto Police Chief David Boothby.

As for the 905, 83% approve (37% strongly) of Fantino's job, with 4% who disapprove.

  • Chief Fantino's job approval is highest among middle-income (87% of those with a household income of $30,000 to $60,000) women (85%) over the age of 55 (95%).
  • Residents with a high school education or less (88%) are more likely to approve of Chief Fantino's performance on the job than residents with a post-secondary (83%) or university (72%) education.

These are the findings of an Ipsos-Reid/Globe and Mail/CFRB/CFTO poll conducted between December 12th and 22nd, 2001. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 400 adult GTA Residents. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 177 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult GTA population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual GTA population according to the 1996 Census data.
