Harper's Tories At High Water Mark (42%) As Quebec
Lifts National Fortunes

Tories (31%) Tied With Bloc (31%) In Volatile Quebec, But Can It Be Sustained?

Ottawa, ON - Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party have been lifted to their high water mark in terms of national support, with a new Ipsos Reid Poll conducted exclusively on behalf of CanWest News Service and Global Television revealing that the Conservative Party now enjoys the unprecedented support of 42% of Canadian decided voters, a three-point climb nationally since last week.

Support for Stephane Dion and the Liberals, on the other hand, remains stagnant at 28% support nationally, while the NDP has rebounded by two points and enjoys the support of 15% of Canadians. The Green Party is holding steady at 7% support.

The key battle ground for Harper, though, is in volatile Quebec where for the first time ever the Conservatives (31%) are tied for support with the Bloc Quebecois (31%). These numbers represent a 19-point decline for the Bloc Quebecois since last week, and a nine-point leap for the Conservatives within Quebec since last week. It remains to be seen if the Conservatives can sustain their good showing in volatile Quebec, and this is certainly something worth watching over the coming weeks.

The Liberal Party in Quebec is also sharing in the spoils of the Bloc's decline this past week, jumping six points from 17% to 23% support. The NDP has the support of one in ten (10%) Quebecers, while the Green Party has 5% support within this province.

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted for CanWest News Service/Global News and fielded from Nov 6 - Nov 8, 2007. For this survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1,000 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the aggregate results are considered accurate to within 177 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within each sub-grouping of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data.

Significant Regional Swings...

  • The most significant change is within the province of Quebec, where the Bloc have fallen from 50% support to 31% support, representing a decline of nineteen points since last week. The Conservatives have gained nine points since last week, jumping from 22% to 31%. The Liberals have also gained some ground in Quebec, moving from 17% support last week to 23% support this week within Quebec.
  • In Ontario, the Tories have dropped slightly (three points) from 43% support to 40% province-wide. The Liberals, though, have gained some ground (two points), moving from 34% to 36% support within Ontario. The NDP have dropped from 14% to 13% support, while the Green Party has moved from 8% support to 10% support.
  • In British Columbia, the Conservatives continue to enjoy a significant lead over their rivals, moving from 42% to 43% within this province. The Liberals have dropped from 28% to 24% in the last week. The NDP have moved from 16% to 27% support, surpassing the Liberals in BC for overall support.
