Just 17% of Canadians Give the Latest Federal Budget Two Thumbs Up
Four in ten Canadians would give the latest federal budget two thumbs down. Only around two in ten overall think the budget is good.

Excluding those who said “don’t know” (28%), four in ten Canadians would give the latest federal budget two thumbs down, rising to 63% among those in Alberta and 55% among those in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Only around two in ten overall think the budget is good, while 43% are neutral and would symbolically shrug.

Again, excluding the 27% of Canadians who are not sure, over a third say the budget will personally hurt them. Over half say it will neither help nor hurt them.
Six in ten Canadians see the budget is too focused on spending, excluding “don’t know” opinions (37%). A third (34%) say the latest budget announcement has made them less likely to vote Liberal in the next election.

Around two thirds do not approve of the overall management of the Canadian economy, with males more likely to strongly approve (11%) compared to females (4%).

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between April 17 to 18, 2024, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
