Most (60%) Canadians Concerned About Impact of No Pipeline on Canada's Economy, Own Financial Situation

Toronto, ON - With pipelines being in the news given US reluctance to approve or reject the Keystone XL Pipeline from Alberta to Texas and the effective killing of an idea to run the pipeline west to the BC coast, most Canadians are worried about the potential financial implications of U.S. President Barack Obama putting the final halt to the divisive pipeline deal.

Six in ten (60%) Canadians `agree' (15% strongly/44% somewhat) that they're `concerned that if Canada's government can't find a way to proceed with some of the oil and gas pipelines that have been proposed, our economy could be hurt in a way that impacts my family's financial security'. Four in ten (40%) `disagree' (14% strongly/26% somewhat) that they have this concern.

Albertans (72%) are the most likely to agree with this sentiment, followed by those living in Ontario (67%), Manitoba and Saskatchewan (63%), Atlantic Canada (57%), British Columbia (53%) and Quebec (47%).

Canadians are also more likely to show this concern the older they get. Canadian seniors (64%, ages 55+) most `agree' (20% strongly/44% somewhat) that they're concerned the Canadian economy could be hurt to the point where it impacts their family's financial situation if pipeline talks cease, followed by middle-aged (59%, ages 35-54) and younger (55%, ages 18-34) Canadians.

While a majority of both men and women share this concern for the Canadian economy and their own family's financial security should pipeline talks grind to a halt, men (64% vs. 56% of women) are significantly more likely to show this concern while women are significantly more likely to `disagree' (44% vs. 36% of men) with this assertion.

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between September 18 to 20, 2013, on behalf of CTV News. For this survey, a sample of 1,035 Canadians from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/-3.5 percentage points had all Canadians adults been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
