NDP (38%) Move Ahead, Challenge Tories (35%) For the Lead
The poll arrives on the heels of parliamentary approval of the Budget Bill (C-38) that passed easily despite budgetary amendments proposed by the opposition. While these attempts were largely symbolic on account of the majority Conservative government, the gesture appears to have bolstered support for the NDP since its low-point of March this year.
If an election were held tomorrow, the NDP, under Thomas Mulclair, would receive 38% of the popular vote, up 3 points since last month. The federal Conservatives, under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, would receive 35% of the vote among decided voters, down 2 points since last month. Support for the Liberal Party wanes at 18%, down 1 point.
Nationally, the Bloc is at 6% (up 1 point), while 4% percent would vote for some other party, including the Green party. One in ten (12%) of voters remain undecided.
The NDP takes the lead in Ontario (40%) and Quebec (40%), while Conservative support in the two provinces trails behind (34% and 18%, respectively).
In Ontario, the Liberals have support from 22% of the province and the Green Party has 4%.
The Bloc would receive one quarter (26%) of the vote in Quebec, the Liberals would receive 15% and the Green Party would receive just 1% of the vote there.
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of Postmedia News and Global Television from June 20 to 21, 2012. For the survey, a representative randomly-selected sample of 1,099 adult Canadians was interviewed online via the Ipsos I-say panel. Ipsos employed weighting to balance demographics and ensure that the sample's composition reflected that of the adult population according to Census data. A survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and a 100% response rate would have an estimated margin of error of sample of 1773.0 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error would be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to, methodology change, coverage error and measurement error.
