Half (47%) of Canadians are More Likely to Make a Debit Purchase if the Transaction Were Waived From Monthly Transaction Limit

Two in three Canadians aged 18-34 are more likely to make a debit purchase if the transaction fee were waived.

Toronto, ON, August 3, 2022 – Half (47%) of Canadians are more likely (24% much more/23% a little more) to make a debit purchase if the transaction were waived from their monthly transaction limit, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of TD Canada Trust. Among those aged 18-34, two in three (65%) are more likely (31% much more/34% a little more) to make a debit purchase if the transaction fee were waived.

Overall, four in ten (41%) Canadians use their debit cards to purchase transit passes or tickets, rising to 53% among those aged 18-34. These data suggest that by removing the transaction limit for transit purchases on debit cards, a barrier to transit usage may be reduced.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between July 21 to 25, 2022, on behalf of TD Canada Trust. For this survey, a sample of 1,501 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.0 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
