A strong majority of Quebecers support the construction of new hydroelectric dams and wind farms in order to increase Hydro-Québec’s production capacity.
Montréal, QC, November 9, 2023 — A survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the Montreal Economic Institute demonstrates the strong support of Quebecers for various measures that could be implemented to increase Hydro-Québec's production capacity.
Specifically, 82% support the construction of more wind farms, and 70% are in favor of building new hydroelectric dams to increase electricity production in Quebec and offset the expected shortfall in 2027. Interestingly, two-thirds of Quebecers (66%) also support the idea of introducing price mechanisms that encourage energy conservation.
Support for these three solutions to help Hydro-Québec meet the province's growing energy needs transcends sociodemographic groups.
However, nuclear power does not receive the same level of support among the population. Thus, 40% of Quebecers support this measure, while 44% oppose it. Men are more favorable (45%) to this option than women (35%).

About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between the 18th and 21st of October 2023, on behalf of the Montreal Economic Institute. For this survey, a sample of 1,161 Canadian adults aged 18+ years was interviewed, including an oversample of 403 residents of Quebec. Quotas and weighting were employed (age, gender and region) to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
