Canadians Place Vladimir Putin (83%) ahead of Donald Trump (80%) atop Santa's Naughty List

Individual Canadians (92%), Their Spouses/Partners (92%), Obama (82%) and the Queen (82%) Top Santa's Nice List

Toronto, ON – Canadians say that Vladimir Putin (83%) should be atop Santa’s “naughty” list, even beating out U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump (80%) for the naughtiest person on Santa’s list, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted for Global News. Other candidates (among the 22 tested) to have received a majority of naughty votes include Justin Bieber (77%), the premiers of Canada’s provinces (63%), Hillary Clinton (55%), Interim Conservative Party Leader Rona Ambrose (54%), Drake (52%) and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair (50%).

Conversely, topping Santa’s “nice” list are individual Canadians who have named themselves to the list (92%), their partners/spouses/significant others (92%), US President Barack Obama (83%), Queen Elizabeth (82%), the Toronto Blue Jays (80%), Pope Francis (80%), Canadians’ next-door neighbours (78%), the Toronto Raptors (72%), Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip (71%), the Montreal Canadiens (70%), Ryan Reynolds (67%), the Toronto Maple Leafs (65%), Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (61%) and Don Cherry (55%).

Focusing on the provincial premiers, Ontario’s residents are most likely to put their own premier (70%) on the “naughty” list, followed residents of Quebec (64%), Alberta (59%), Atlantic Canada (56%), and British Columbia (55%). Just 43% of residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba would put their own premiers on the “naughty” list, while a majority (57%) places them on the “nice” list.

Regarding Prime Minister Trudeau, three in four (74%) Atlantic Canadians would put him on the “nice” list, while fewer Quebecers (63%), Ontarians (62%), British Columbians (61%) and residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (52%) would do the same. However, only 47% of Albertans say Trudeau deserves to be on Santa’s “nice” list, while 53% say he has been “naughty” this year.

Quebecers may be feeling a bit Grinch-y this Christmas, as they are disproportionately harsher on many figures tested, including on Donald Trump (84% naughty), Justin Bieber (81% naughty), Don Cherry (71% naughty), Drake (65% naughty), Ryan Reynolds (51% naughty), and even Queen Elizabeth (29% naughty).

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between December 15 and 21, 2016, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 3,004 Canadians from Ipsos' online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval.  In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/ - 2.0 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadian adults been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
