Harrison Ford (32%) and Julia Roberts (27%) top favourites among Canadians

 

Tom Hanks (21%), Mel Gibson (15%), Meryl Streep (19%), Meg Ryan (19%), and Susan Sarandon (13%)also popular

Toronto, Ontario, Canada -- On the eve of the Oscars, an Angus Reid poll released today identifies Canadians' favourite actors and actresses amongst a listing of 16 of Hollywood's top box office actors and actresses. One-third (32%) of Canadians choose Harrison Ford as their favourite male movie actor and more than one-quarter (27%) choose Julia Roberts as their favourite female actress. Among the actors, Tom Hanks (21%) and Mel Gibson (15%) also make impressive showings. Among the actresses, Meryl Streep and Meg Ryan (19%) are tied in second place, with Susan Sarandon close behind (13%).

Demographic highlights:

  • Harrison Ford is the most favourite actor among Canadians across the regional, age, income, education, and gender spectrums, although it is noteworthy that he is most popular among those holding a university degree (42%) and with an annual household income of $60,000 or more (38%).
  • Julia Roberts' status as most favourite actress among Canadians spans the regional, age, income, education, and gender spectrums, with the exception of British Columbia (24%) where Meryl Streep (25%) is slightly more popular. Also, Roberts finds more support among those without a high school degree (32%) than those with a university degree (20%).
  • Streep is much more likely to find support among those aged 55 and older (30%) than those in the 35 to 54 (20%) and 18 to 34 (8%) age brackets. Women (24%) are also noticeably more likely to choose Streep as their favourite than men (14%).
  • In contrast to Streep, Meg Ryan's support is more likely to come from the 18 to 34 (23%) and 35 to 54 (22%) age brackets than those aged 55 and older (10%).
  • Notably, Tom Cruise is more popular among women (12%) than men (5%), whereas Cameron Diaz is much more popular among men (10%) than women (2%).
