Six in Ten (58%) Ontarians (Up 2 Points) Believe
Resale Homes Subject to HST

Residents of Northern Ontario (66%), GTA (60%) Most Likely to Believe HST Applies to Resale Homes

Toronto, ON - Ontarians continue to be confused about what transactions are subject to HST and which are exempt as six in ten (58%) believe that the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is applied to the purchase price of a resale home in Ontario, according to a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of the Ontario Real Estate Association.

Despite a general push to educate Ontarians on what is subject to the HST and what isn't, the proportion of Ontarians who believe that resale homes receive the added 13% tax is up 2 points. In reality, HST is only applied to new-build homes in Ontario, while re-sale homes are exempt from the tax.

Those in Northern Ontario (66%, -5 points) and the GTA (60%, +6 points) are most likely to believe that HST is applied to resale homes, while those living in Eastern (59%, unchanged), South-western (58%, -1 point) and Central Ontario (50%, -1 point) are less likely.

Women (63%) are more likely than men (53%) to believe that resale homes are subject to HST.

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between September 15-19, 2011, on behalf of the Ontario Real Estate Association. For this survey, a sample of 813 Ontarians from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics and political composition to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. A survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and a 100% response rate would have an estimated margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what the results would have been had the entire population of adults in Ontario been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
