Six In Ten Canadians (58%) Approve of the Liberal Government’s Performance Under PM Carney

As parliament resumes on Sept. 15th – and with Poilievre taking his new seat in the House of Commons – a new Ipsos poll finds that, if another federal election were held tomorrow, the Liberal party would hold a four-point lead in the decided vote (43%, -1 pt) over the Conservatives (39%, -2 pts), a result that remains relatively close to the popular vote of the federal election in April. Still lagging behind is the NDP (7%, +1 pt), a party which has seen a dwindling supporter base over the course of the last year, which remains near historic lows. The Bloc Quebecois would garner 7% (+ 1 pt) of the national vote, 32% in Quebec, while the Green party would garner just 1% (no change) and the PPC 2% (+2 pts).

Approval of the Liberal government under Mark Carney sits at 58%, which is 10 points higher than the government’s approval rating in April, prior to Carney’s election. Government approval ratings haven’t been this high in nine years, when 61% of Canadians approved of the performance of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after his first year in office. Approval is higher among those 18-34 (63% vs. 52% 35-54, 59% 55+). Liberal voters remain satisfied with Carney’s leadership (91% approve, with 37% strongly approving) while 33% of Conservative voters express approval of the Liberal government under Carney.

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between September 5 and 8, 2025, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
