Ottawa, ON - A new Ipsos Reid poll conducted exclusively on behalf of CanWest News Service and Global Television reveals that the federal Conservative Party under Prime Minister Stephen Harper has the support of 37% of decided voters, placing them eight points ahead of Stephane Dion's Liberals at 29% support.
The New Democratic Party led by Jack Layton trails behind with the support of 14% of decided voters, while Elizabeth May's Green Party is receiving support from 10% of Canadians. Eight percent (8%) of Canadians do not know for which party they would vote.
Within Quebec, the Gilles Duceppe's Bloc continues to lead with 35% support, while the Tories (26%) and the Grits (21%) find themselves in second and third place, respectively. The New Democratic Party within la belle province has the support of 12% of decided Quebecers, while the Green Party lags with 5% support.
In vote-rich Ontario, the Tories enjoy the lead with 39% support, while the Liberals trail at 33%. The NDP is at 15%, and the Green Party is receiving 12% of the support among decided voters.
In British Columbia, the Tories at 43% are well ahead of the Grits (26%), NDP (15%) and Green Party (13%).
Within Alberta, the Conservatives have the support of a majority (55%) of decided Albertan voters, and lead the Liberals (16%), New Democratic Party (16%) and the Greens (11%) by a considerable margin.
In Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the Liberals (39%) have a slight edge over the Conservatives (37%), while the NDP (13%) and Green Party (12%) are quite some distance behind.
Finally, the majority (51%) of decided voters in Atlantic Canada are giving their vote support to the Liberal Party, while the Tories (25%) are in a distant second. The NDP (16%) and the Green Party (5%) also trails significantly in this part of the country.
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of CanWest News Service and Global Television from January 22 to January 24, 2008. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1001 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 1773.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population of Canada been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure that the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data.
