Trudeau (30%) Tumbles (-12) among Canadians' Choice for Best Prime Minister as Harper (38%) Ascends (+3) and Mulcair (31%) Climbs (+7)

Harper Reclaims Lead in Most Leadership Attributes Tested

Toronto, ON -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper has once again reclaimed top spot as the party leader that Canadians say would make the "best prime minister" -- a position he hasn't held since Justin Trudeau was elected leader of the Liberals. Moreover, according to the new Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Global News, Prime Minister Harper has reclaimed the lead on most of the eleven leadership attributes tested in the poll.

In contrast, recognition for Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau as the choice of "best prime minister" for Canada has tumbled significantly along with ten of eleven other leadership attributes tested, as NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair's rising leadership qualities have eclipsed the falling star in many cases.

Thinking about which of the major federal party leaders would make the best Prime Minister of Canada, 38% choose Stephen Harper (up 3 points from 35% in September of 2014), while NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair (31%, up 7 points from 24%) and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau (30%, down 12 points from 42%) are now statistically tied.

With an election scheduled to be held in October, 2015, the question is whether or not the young leader can improve his stature in contrast to the other two leaders in time to help boost Liberal campaign fortunes, especially as the same trend is found in most of the leadership attributes tested in the poll. Respondents were presented with an attribute and asked to pick the leader that is best described by the trait, tracked back to February of 2014:

  • Someone you can trust: Harper (36%, +5), Mulcair (32%, +2) Trudeau (31%, -7)
  • Someone who will get things done: Harper (39%, +4), Trudeau (31%, -7), Mulcair (30%, +4)
  • Someone who has what it takes to lead Canada: Harper (40%, +3), Trudeau (32%, -5), Mulcair, (29%, +3)
  • Someone who is best to manage during tough economic times: Harper (45%, +2), Mulcair (28%, +1), Trudeau (27%, -3)
  • Someone who wants to be Prime Minister for the right reasons: Harper (36%, +5), Mulcair (33%, +2), Trudeau (31%, -7)
  • Someone who has a vision of Canada that you can support: Harper (37%, +5), Trudeau (33%, -7), Mulcair (30%, +2)
  • Someone who will provide an open, responsible and ethical government: Mulcair (34%, +2), Trudeau (33%, -5), Harper (32%, +1)
  • Someone who will best lead and represent Canada on the world stage: Harper (39%, +3), Trudeau (33%, -7), Mulcair (28%, +4)
  • Someone whose values best represent my own: Harper (36%, +4), Trudeau (33%, -3), Mulcair (31%, -1)
  • Someone who will promote democracy and its processes effectively: Harper (34%, +3), Mulcair (34%, +3), Trudeau (33%, -5)
  • Someone who has a hidden agenda: Harper (48%, -4), Trudeau (33%, +1), Mulcair (19%, +3)

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between April 2nd and 7th, 2015 on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians (including 915 decided voters) from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within 177 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadian adults been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
