Two Thirds (65%) Support Dr. Henry Morgentaler's Appointment to the Order of Canada
Toronto, ON - On the heels of the controversial appointment of abortion-rights activist Dr. Henry Morgentaler to the Order of Canada for his commitment to increased healthcare options for women, a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted exclusively on behalf of CanWest News Service and Global National finds that two thirds (65%) of Canadians `support' (27% strongly/37% somewhat) Dr. Morgentaler receiving Canada's highest honour.
Despite Prime Minister Harper's personal dissatisfaction with this decision and his subsequent comment that the Order of Canada should unite Canadians, it appears that he is in the minority, as only one in three (35%) Canadians `oppose' (19% strongly/16% somewhat) Dr. Morgentaler being awarded the Order of Canada.
Support for Morgentaler's appointment varies by many key demographics:
- Women (68%) are more likely than men (61%) to support Dr. Morgentaler's appointment to the Order of Canada.
- Quebecers (72%) are most likely to support this appointment, followed by those living in Ontario (69%), British Columbia (61%), Alberta (54%), Atlantic Canada (52%) and Saskatchewan and Manitoba (51%).
- Younger Canadians (70%), aged 18 to 34, are more likely than middle-aged Canadians (65%), 35 to 54, or older Canadians (59%) , 55 and older, to support this decision.
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of CanWest News Service and Global Television from 07/4 to 07/7, 2008. This online survey of 1,023 adult Canadians was conducted via the Ipsos I-Say Online Panel, Ipsos Reid's national online panel. The results are based on a sample where quota sampling and weighting are employed to balance demographics and ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data. Quota samples with weighting from the Ipsos online panel provide results that are intended to approximate a probability sample. An unweighted probability sample of this size, with a 100% response rate, would have an estimated margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
