The Hong Kong New Normal Tracking Study - Consumption Trends March 2021

The Hong Kong New Normal Tracking Study measures changes in attitudes and behaviour in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020. Highlights from March 2021 wave:

Use of mobile payment as a way to avoid unnecessary contact is steadily declining since November, along with proportion of people buying groceries online. After a slight rebound in February, shopping mall visits have decreased again in March.

52% declare having bought organic food in the past month, including 18% online. 41% have bought health products & supplements, including 28% online. 36% have bought white goods and 27% have bought a HKD 5,000+ luxury item, including 8% online.

60% of people have gone out at a restaurant, slightly down since February, but still higher than the previous four months. The proportion of people who have socialized with friends and family in person is also down slightly, at 65%. 12% have also used or consumed wellness-related content in the past month, and 15% have gone to theater or movies, the highest level since November 2020.
