Canadians On Energy

Where Does Energy Rank?

Calgary, AB - A new Ipsos Reid poll shows that 44% of Canadians are very concerned (82% concerned overall) with Canada's energy supply for the future, on par with concern for the Education system (45% Very Concerned, 82% overall) and ahead of Canada's Economy (38% Very Concerned, 81% overall), but still trailing concern for the Healthcare System (61% Very Concerned, 92% overall) and Environment and Pollution (56% Very Concerned, 91% overall).

On a regional basis, the intensity of concern about Canada's future energy supply is highest among residents of Ontario and Atlantic Canada (48% Very Concerned), and significantly lower among Canadians residing in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (40% Very Concerned) and Quebec (37% Very Concerned).

Creating Common Standards

In keeping with the overall levels of concern about future energy supply, the great majority of Canadians agree (88%) that the federal, provincial and territorial governments should create a common set of rules to standardize how energy resources are developed, transported, and sold. Fully one-half (50%) of Canadians strongly agree with the creation of one set of rules while another 38% indicating they somewhat agree with this proposition.

Interestingly, the strongest levels of agreement for such "regulatory harmonization" were found in eastern Canada (Atlantic 56% Strongly Agree, Quebec and Ontario 51% Strongly Agree) with somewhat lower intensity of views being recorded in the West (Saskatchewan / Manitoba 47% Strongly Agree, Alberta 46% Strongly Agree, BC 45% Strongly Agree.)

Increasing Natural Gas Supply And Protecting The Environment

Nearly two-thirds of Canadians agree (65%) that it is possible to increase natural gas supplies while simultaneously protecting the environment. Looking at the intensity of the public's voice on this issue, 22% strongly agree while 43% somewhat agree that progress can be made on a cleaner environment and natural gas supplies at the same time. By comparison 14% somewhat disagree and 4% strongly disagree with this idea.

Canadians show little regional variation on this issue. When looking across the country, the percentage who strongly agree with the idea varies by only one percentage point above or below the national average of 22%. Similarly on an overall basis only Atlantic Canada with 70% agreement (21% strongly, 49% somewhat) that progress can be made on natural gas supply and environment at the same time stands out from the Canadian average of 65%.

Methodology
These are findings of an Ipsos Reid survey fielded from May 24th to 27th, 2007. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1,000 adult Canadians were interviewed via an on-line survey. With a sample of this size, the aggregate results are considered accurate to within 177 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within each sub-grouping of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data.
