Canadians Say Vancouver/Whistler Should Go For Gold

Seven in Ten (70%) Say Federal Government Should Assist Financially With 2010 Olympic Bid
Toronto, ON - On the heels of Toronto's failed Olympic bid, Canadians indicate that the country's Federal government should help fund the Vancouver/Whistler bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics. According to a new Ipsos-Reid/CTV/Globe and Mail survey, seven in ten (70%) Canadians say that the Federal government should help fund the Vancouver/Whistler bid, while three in ten (27%) say the Federal government should not help fund the bid. Canadians from Atlantic Canada (78%) are most likely to say the Federal government should help fund the Vancouver/Whistler bid for the 2010 Winter Olympic games, followed by BC (73%), Alberta (72%), Ontario (70%), and Saskatchewan/Manitoba (69%). Quebecers (66%) are least likely to support Federal funding for the bid.

  • Canadians aged 18 to 34 years (76%) are more likely than those 35 to 54 (69%) and 55+ (65%) to say that the Federal government should help fund the Vancouver/Whistler bid.

These are the findings of an Ipsos-Reid/CTV/Globe and Mail poll conducted between July 17th and July 19th, 2001. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 1,000 adult Canadians. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 177 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual adult Canadian population according to the 1996 Census data.
