DR. ANGUS REID ACCEPTS POSITION AT UBC'S LIU CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF GLOBAL ISSUES
Founder of Canada's Premier Market & Social Research Company to Join Prestigious Program as Senior Fellow
Toronto, ON - Dr. Angus Reid, President and CEO of Ipsos-Reid -- formerly the Angus Reid Group -- announced today that he has accepted a position at the University of British Columbia's Liu Centre for Study of Global Issues as a Senior Fellow. Dr. Reid will be stepping down as President and CEO of the company that he founded 22 years ago, effective October 5, 2001. He will remain as a consultant to the company until January 2002 when he will then leave to take up his new posting and join the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, former Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is the Director and CEO of the Liu Centre.
"Though I am sad to leave this company, which has become my second family for more than 20 years, I'm looking forward to returning to the academic environment and to spend time working on my `Brand America' book which is to be published by Random House", said Dr. Reid. "I feel especially fortunate to be leaving the company in such capable hands -- both with existing management and leadership from Ipsos. The executive team we have at Ipsos-Reid is the strongest management group we have had in the past two decades and will strongly complement other Ipsos operations in North America and around the world. Ipsos-Reid is more profitable than at any time in its history -- a testament to the synergies that were unleashed when Ipsos acquired the former Angus Reid Group over a year ago", he said.
Simon Kooyman, Chairman and CEO of Ipsos North America, congratulated Dr. Reid on his new posting and praised him for his long-standing contribution to the Canadian market research community in Canada and abroad. "Dr. Reid's impact on the face of public opinion and market research in Canada, the United States and indeed everywhere that Ipsos-Reid has carried out assignments for clients around the world, cannot be overstated. Dr. Reid leaves a legacy which is unparalleled -- including a vibrant and strong market research company that he led for 22 years and continues to serve by way of its 400 full-time staff to over 1,200 clients."
Mr. Kooyman was joined by the senior management of Ipsos-Reid -- including President of Canadian Consumer Market Research, Gary Bennewies, who has been appointed interim CEO; Tom Neri, President of U.S. Consumer Market Research; and, Dr. Darrell Bricker, President & COO of Public Affairs North America -- in expressing their gratitude to Dr. Reid and their confidence in carrying on the rich tradition of providing clients with market research and public opinion insights that have been the hallmark of the company's success.
"We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Reid join the Liu Centre and the faculty of Graduate Studies", said the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy. "At a time when world events draw nations and people closer together and make them truly global citizens, there is no one who better understands, through the public opinion studies he has directed worldwide, the dimensions of what this new environment means", he said.
Dr. Reid, previously a professor at the University of Manitoba, established the Angus Reid Group over a 7/11 Store in Winnipeg in 1979. Acknowledged as the largest market research acquisition in Canadian history, the company was purchased by Ipsos S.A. in 2000 and became part of the eighth largest market research company in the world. Ipsos-Reid joined a family of North American market research companies also purchased by Ipsos S.A. which included ASI, Tandemar, the Market Research Division of NPD and, recently, Riehle Research.
The Paris-based publicly traded Ipsos S.A. was established in 1975 and has operations in 26 countries. Since July 1, 1999 Ipsos has been listed on the Nouveau Marche of the Paris Stock Exchange.
