Eight in Ten Canadians Believe Employers Responsible for Supporting Their Health

One in Three (35%) Report Productivity at Work Has Been Negatively Affected by their Physical or Mental Health
Toronto, ON - Eight in ten Canadians believe that their employers should take responsibility in supporting their employee's physical and psychological health, according to an Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Sun Life Financial. Eight in ten (82%) `agree' (32% significant responsibility/50% some responsibility) employers are responsible for supporting their employees' physical health, and 83% `agree' (34% significant responsibility/49% some responsibility) employers are responsible for supporting their employees' psychological health.

Supporting the physical and psychological health of employees may have some consequences for productivity in the workplace. One in three (35%) working Canadians report (7% significantly/28% somewhat) that in the past six months, their productivity at work has been negatively affected by their physical or mental health. Interestingly, Canadians that make up Generation Y (47%, 18-30 years of age) are most likely to say their productivity at work has been negatively affected by their physical or mental health compared to members of Generation X (36%, 31-47 years of age), late boomers (30%, 48-57 years of age), early boomers (26%, 58-66 years of age) and pre-boomers (4%, 67-80 years of age).

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted between June 15 to June 23, 2015, on behalf of Sun Life Financial. For this survey, a sample of 2,404 Canadians from Ipsos' online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 2.3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadian adults been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
