Eighty Seven Percent Of Canada's Small And Medium Sized Retailers Victimized By Crime In The Past Year
Toronto, ON - Findings from a new Ipsos Reid survey conducted on behalf of the Retail Council of Canada and Royal Bank of Canada indicate that the majority of small and medium-sized retail business owners in Canada (87%) have been subject to some form of retail crime in the past 12 months. While many small to medium sized business owner have experienced shop theft (68%), other types of retail crimes such as fraud (50%), employee theft (35%) or even intrusion (23%) are also prevalent.
In total, small-business owners suspect that the summation of these various crimes costs them an average of $1,005 each month. While not all retailers are able to pinpoint the cause of all these losses, the survey suggests that up to $700 may be lost through customer theft and $200 through employee theft on a monthly basis.
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of the Retail Council of Canada and Royal Bank of Canada from July 30 to August 31, 2007. For the survey, 280 Small and Medium-sized business owners were interviewed online. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 177 5.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20 of what they would have been had the entire population of SMBs been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population.
