The Expedia Take Your Relationship on Vacation Survey

Canadian Couples Speak

Toronto, ON - The Expedia.ca Take Your Relationship on Vacation survey finds that most (55%) Canadians think September is a great time of year for a couple to reconnect and renew on vacation because it is the unofficial "New Year". Moreover, six in ten (62%) couples think a vacation with their partner would likely improve their relationship. Yet, 16% say their last vacation together was at least five years ago and 13% say they've never vacationed together!

The survey indicates that different couples prefer different types of vacations. When it comes to which type of vacation couples would choose to reconnect or recapture the thrill with their partner, the most popular selection is an all-inclusive vacation package to a sunny destination (43%). The runner up is a romantic escape at a B&B or country inn (20%), closely followed by a trip to a country to visit several cities (17%). Sightseeing in a major city (7%) and an extreme or specialized trip (5%) are less popular options.

But, sometimes the individuals in the relationship may have different preferences too. Four in ten (39%) Canadians in a relationship have vacationed without their partner; 6% of couples regularly take separate vacations and one-third (33%) have done so, but not regularly. Another 10% have not taken a separate vacation, but have not ruled out the possibility of doing so in the future.

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid/expedia.ca online survey conducted from September 7 to September 10, 2006. The survey was conducted among a representative randomly selected sample of 1656 adult Canadians in a relationship; that is, married, living common-law, or dating. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within +/-2.4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had this entire population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted according to Census data.
